Biography
My name is Jane Murphy and I am the owner of Jane Murphy Custom Treatments and I have been in the custom interior business since 1995 here in Georgia. I re-located here from NY in 1993, where I had a business called Jane Cosgrove Contracting. Some of my clients included Calvin Klein, Albert Nipon, Carol Fertig, and Debra Moorefield. I made samples and small productions for their clothing lines. In additon, I worked with Christos - the bridal designer - when he started his business in 1984 as his assistant. My beginnings also included working on some commercials and movie sets. I attended FIT, Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC and have a degree in Fashion Design. Our move to Georgia opened my eyes to the interior decorating field, and in 1995 I began a new business making window treatments and other fabric accessories for homes. My background in pattern making, draping, dressmaking, tailoring, and millinery has lent itself well to working on home interiors. I employ many of the techniques I learned to produce a refined product for my clients. I am currently a member of WCAA, Window Coverings of America Association, a group of professionals who continue to learn about our craft and share ideas and resources to promote the industry. I love to help people and have mentored several young women to enter into the business, passing along my knowledge and skill to another generation. In helping others, I have worked with members of my church to make window treatments for a Habitat for Humanity House, made diaper bags for single moms, and made a banner for a sister church's nursery. I have also taken two mission trips to Jamaica to teach women how to sew. I enjoy working on large projects and building things. I see problems and impossibilities as challenges and love the creative process. I learned to sew as a child from my grandma and mom, and continue to love my trade and to hone my skills. There are conferences in the window treatment industry, which I attend, to continue to learn, and to find out about new products and innovations in the field. |
